What Exactly Is a PAT Test?

Blu-Lite Electrical Services • Feb 03, 2020
Where electrical appliances are concerned, it’s of the utmost importance that all necessary steps are taken to ensure that health and safety measures are kept to an acceptable standard. There are a number of precautions and tests that can be put in place to ensure that safety is upheld; a PAT Test is one of these measures. Read on to find out more.

What Is a Pat Test?
PAT stands for ‘Portable Appliance Testing’ and, as the name suggests, a PAT Test involves the routine inspection and testing of portable electrical appliances to ensure they are fit for purpose and safe to use. At the end of the inspection process, a decision will be made on every appliance to indicate whether it has passed or failed.

What Does a PAT Test Involve?
PAT Tests are relatively simple and involve both visual checks as well as more detailed inspections on the operation of the application. These tests include lead polarity, earth continuity and insulation resistance. The inspector will also look for any damage including frayed wires and cracked plugs. Once tested, the inspector may be able to repair the appliance - if it’s possible - or advise on the next course of action. There’s no strict regulation about when an application should be tested, it’s generally advised that applications are looked at once every one or two years.

Do I Need One?
If you haven’t had your appliances tested in a while - particularly if you’re a landlord or business owner - it’s essential that you have these tests completed to remain compliant with regulation and best practice. If an accident were to occur involving an application that hadn’t been tested, you could find yourself in hot water.

The lighting you have around your home can make a big difference in how each space looks and feels. But, many homeowners overlook this part when it comes to decorating and working on home improvements. Good lighting can transform a gloomy area into a bright and inviting space and professional electricians can help. Here are three light installations that you should consider in your home. Garden lighting If you’ve not thought about external lighting before then you could be missing out on many benefits. Garden lighting can be installed in the back of your home, making you feel safer when returning home at night or leaving early in the morning. Back garden lighting is also a great way of creating a relaxing atmosphere outside. So, if you miss using your garden in the evening, adding lighting will build a relaxing feel to your garden and of course make it a usable space throughout the entire day. Kitchen lighting The kitchen is the hub of your home so why not make it look great? Swapping your old light fixtures for a new installation will brighten up the space which is great for entertaining. You can also install lighting along the bottom of your kitchen units to illuminate along the floor and add a touch of luxury into your home. Front of your home As well as adding lighting in the back you can also add it to the front of your home. If you have a drive, path or steps why not install small lights around this area? Not only will this make the front of your home safer and prevent injuries but it’s also a way of deterring criminals from entering your property. At Blu Lite Electrical Services , based in Kent, we offer a range of domestic and commercial light services. Whether you’re at home or at work, electrical appliances and the electric currents running through your property have the potential to be a threat to your safety. Tested regularly and regulated according to strict safety regulations, electricity is perfectly safe. However, if you don’t get your fixed installations tested for faults regularly enough, disaster could be just around the corner. What Must Be Tested As opposed to PAT Testing - which tests portable appliances - electrical test and inspection checks check the fixed installations within a property. Including wiring, switches, earth bonding, fuse boxes, machinery and power sockets, electrical test and inspection checks use devises like voltmeters to ensure that all installations are fit for purpose and safe to use. The Risks There are a number of potentially life-threatening risks associated with failing to get your electrical installations checked regularly enough. Any physical contact with live parts of electrical fixtures could cause significant shocks and burns, so it’s imperative that any fixtures that are prone to breaking are checked and fixed. Potentially more worrying, electrical fires can spark when electrical installations have been left untested for too long. Some of the most common causes of electrical fires include faulty light fixtures, faulty wiring and faulty outlets; all of which are tested. If a fire becomes wide-spread, the loss of life can be tragic. The Law If you own a commercial, office, retail or education property, you should have your electrical installations tested at least every five years to ensure that they are fit for purpose. This time period is also the legal requirement for rented properties which are a ‘House in Multiple Occupation (HMO) to ensure that tenants remain safe in their homes. You should always have your electrical installations checked by a qualified electrician.
